In the real world Neither Russia nor China wants to get into an all out war, they both have enough problems as it is with natural events, such as floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. And they also have to deal with the positives and negatives of large gowing pains such as massive influxes of capital, technology etc.

Here's an example, China has been exploding in the sales of new cars, which sounds great, however many people are buying cars, driving off the lot and then realizing they still don't know how to drive. That can be a real problem when you consider 10's of thousands of new cars on the roads with brand new drivers just learning how to drive.

Russia has experienced many changes over the past 10 years as well including a rapidly expanding economic boom and all the pro's, cons and growth pains that come with that as well.

They had no desire to conquer Georgia and they'd rather leave the Ukrain alone as they have enough things to deal with.

The US wants to own them like Iraq, so they proceded to set up all those "defense mille systems" in their backyard directly threatening their existence.
